Allegra (fexofenadine) is a very widely-used antihistamine medication effective at treating allergy symptoms of runny nose, watery eyes, itching, sneezing and so forth. Though not a cure for allergies, it does significantly reduce or even eliminate symptoms during use.

Patients frequently buy Allegra to control allergy symptoms from a number of sources, including:

• Exposure to pollen or other outdoor allergens;
• Exposure to pet dander, mold, or other indoor allergens;
• Contact with plants or other irritants which cause rashes or hives;
• Rashes, hives or itching of unknown origin, including idiopathic urticaria.

This product is known by several other brand names, including Telfast, Allerfexo, Vifas and others. Patients can also buy Allegra as the generic fexofenadine. Though a prescription was once required to buy Allegra products, they are now available over-the-counter in most areas.

Choosing the Right Product

There are a range of Allegra products available, each designed to fit a particular need. The choice is entirely up to patient preference:

• Allegra 60 mg tablets - For patients 12 years old and up. Typically taken twice per day. Effects last around 12 hours.
• Allegra 120 or 180 mg tablets - For patients 12 years old and up. Taken once per day. Effects last 24 hours.
• Allegra D 60 mg tablets - The same as regular Allegra 60 mg tablets but contains an additional decongestant (pseudoephedrine).
• Allegra D 180 mg tablets - The same as regular Allegra 180 mg tablets but contains the decongestant pseudoephedrine as well.
• Allegra Oral Suspension - For patients aged 2 to 11 years old. Each dose contains 30 mg fexofenadine, which is effective for around 12 hours.
• Allegra Orally Dissolving Tablets (ODT) - For patients 6 years old and up. Tablets contain 30 mg fexofenadine and readily dissolve on the tongue.

While the oral suspension and orally dissolving tablets are designed for children, there's no reason an adult can't use them as well by taking higher doses. Just don't exceed 180 mg in one day.

One reason many allergy sufferers prefer to buy Allegra over similar products is that Allegra works fast and can be used as-needed. Allergy treatments which contain steroids require days or weeks of treatment before full benefits are felt; Allegra's effects peak around one hour after administration.

All Allegra products are non-drowsy, unlike many similar treatments. A small percentage of patients do report feeling dizzy or drowsy when taking Allegra though, so caution should be exercised until effects on an individual are known.

Getting the Most from Treatment

There are a few things patients can do to maximize effects of Allegra. The medication works best if taken on an empty stomach, but sometimes this is not possible, or doing so produces disruptive gastrointestinal side effects. If taking Allegra with food, there are certain items that should be avoided for around 30 minutes before or after administration. These products can considerably interfere with absorption of Allegra, thus reducing its effectiveness:

• Fatty foods
• Fruit juices, including orange juice, apple juice and grapefruit juice
• Antacids, vitamins, or supplements containing aluminum or magnesium

Allegra may interact with other medications. Interactions are unlikely to produce serious adverse effects, but it may reduce the effectiveness of one or more of the medications involved. Speak with a doctor or pharmacist if unsure of the consequences of mixing particular medications.
